Arrakis and the off-world aesthetic
→ Blade Runner (1982)
Arrakis's retrofuture industrial aesthetic — organic machinery, desert-punk design — owes a debt to Ridley Scott's production design logic. Both worlds feel ancient and used rather than sleek and new.

Villeneuve inherits Kubrick's monumental scale
→ 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Villeneuve has cited 2001 as the template for Dune's visual grammar: the monumental scale that makes humans look insignificant against the forces they claim to control. The sandworm is the monolith.
