The Copacabana tracking shot — Scorsese's answer to Coppola
→ The Godfather (1972)
The Copacabana one-take is Scorsese's answer to Coppola's baptism sequence. Both directors believe the shot is the argument: the tracking shot earns Henry Hill's intoxication just as Coppola's crosscut earns Michael's damnation.

Henry Hill's narrated decline — the complicit protagonist
→ Taxi Driver (1976)
Scorsese uses the same voiceover technique from Taxi Driver: a man narrating his own destruction with more affection than regret. Both protagonists are unreliable architects of their own mythology.
